An online petition calling on Isle of Wight Council to reverse charges for domestic DIY waste, such as rubble, wood and soil, has reached more than 2,100 signatures.
What are the new DIY waste charges?
Daniel Moss launched the petition just over two weeks ago after the council announced it would be bringing in DIY waste charges from 14th September 2026 at Lynbottom and Afton Marsh Household Waste Recycling Centres.
The new system only allows residents to take two 50-litres bags of DIY waste per week free of charge. Any more than that and residents will be charged.
Question to the committee
The petition has attracted a huge response in a short period of time, and today (Thursday 24th Sep 2026), Daniel will be attending the Environment and Community Protection Committee to ask a question on behalf of residents:
“How does the Council justify introducing a second tier of payment for DIY waste disposal, when households already fund waste services through council tax?”
Concerns over fairness and fly-tipping
Daniel will argue that residents are raising concerns about fairness, affordability, and the risk that these charges could increase fly‑tipping across the Island.
