Petition calling for ban on raw sewage being discharged into water courses nearing deadline (updated)

An online petition calling for a ban on Water Companies discharging raw sewage into water courses comes to a close on Tuesday (12th October).

Of the 72,332 signatures already added to the petition, 256 are from the Isle of Wight. That’s less than 0.2 per cent of the Island’s population.

Ban discharges of raw sewage
At 100,000 signatures, the petition must be considered for debate in Parliament. It reads:

Ban Water Companies discharging raw sewage into water courses. Ensure Water companies treat the sewage they are responsible for. Not discharge it into rivers and water courses.

“After all what goes into the ocean comes back as the fish we eat.

“A top priority” say the Government
Once the petition had reached 10,000 signatures in May, the Government responded, saying,

“Tackling the harm caused by sewage is a top priority for Government.

“That is why we have established the Storm Overflows Taskforce and have announced plans for legislation to address this problem.”

How to add your signature
If you would like to add your name to the petition, which closes on Tuesday 12th October, head over the the official petition Website, where you can also read the full Government response.

Already illegal
It has been brought to our attention this morning that the discharge of ‘raw sewage’ is already illegal.

Southern Water have however, pledged to significantly slash the number of wastewater discharges in the Solent.
