Initial enquiries suggest that the elderly man may have suffered a medical episode as he walked along, causing him to collapse and fall into the road where he was struck by the vehicle, a British racing green DAF 7.5 tonne truck.

He was taken to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport with multiple life-threatening injuries. He remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the truck, a man in his early 60s from Southampton, was shaken but uninjured.

The road was closed until 1.30pm while collision investigators examined the scene.

No arrests have been made.
