Police are appealing for witnesses after a road traffic collision involving a horse and a car on Dinglers Hill between Shalfleet and Newport on the Isle of Wight.
Officers from the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) were called shortly after 7pm on Monday, May 16, 2011 to the A3054 Yarmouth Road near the entrance to Dinglers Farm.
Extensive bruising for rider
The horse rider, a woman aged in her 40s from the island, received extensive bruising after falling from her animal during the collision with a dark coloured Ford Fiesta.
She later went to hospital and was discharged after treatment.
Driver shaken but not injured
The Ford driver, a woman aged in her 60s from the island, was shaken but not injured physically. The Fiesta received extensive damage.
The horse suffered severe injuries in the collision and was put to sleep by a vet at the collision scene after the owner gave permission.
A second horse rider, aged in her 30s from the island, was badly shocked but not injured physically in the collision. She had been riding immediately behind the first horse when the collision took place.
Appeal for witnesses
A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: “The woman injured in this collision is totally devastated at the loss of her horse. She remains extremely upset about the collision, which could have had far more serious consequences for her personally.
“Officers from the Roads Policing Unit have examined the collision scene and would like to thank members of the public who stopped to help.
“We are appealing for any other motorists or pedestrians who were near Dinglers Farm at around 7pm on Monday evening (May 16) to come forward.
“Witnesses who remember seeing a dark coloured Ford Fiesta or two horse riders on the main Newport to Yarmouth road before the collision took place are also encouraged to contact police.”
