The Met Office have issued a severe weather warning for later in the week.
Valid from 00.10am until midday on Friday (12th December), it reads,
There is the potential for gales or severe gales to develop across much of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and southern Scotland during Thursday night and into Friday, and then lasting for much of the day, before slowly easing from the west during the afternoon and into the evening. A band of heavy rain, with snow on northern hills, will accompany the low pressure system, this pushing quickly southeast through the day.
In addition to the very strong winds, some overtopping waves are possible on western and southern coasts of England and Wales. The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to travel and perhaps power supplies.
The Chief Forecaster says,
A rapidly deepening area of low pressure has potential to develop in the mid-Atlantic and then run quickly northeast across the northern half of the UK during Friday. To the south of this low pressure centre, gales, or severe gales are likely to develop, with gusts to 50-60 mph quite widely in the warning area. Gusts in excess of 70 mph may develop in exposure, especially along Irish Sea and English Channel coasts, where large waves could bring a risk of spray and overtopping. A period of heavy rain may also make for tricky driving conditions at times, this perhaps turning to snow over northern hills later.
This is a very dynamic situation, and details of this development will likely change. As such, this alert will be updated in the coming days as confidence grows in track and timing of this low pressure system.
