RAAC at council building being ‘appropriately monitored’, say Isle of Wight council (updated)

A small area of the roof at The Heights leisure centre in Sandown contains reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) and is being ‘appropriately monitored’, say the Isle of Wight council (IWC).

As News OnTheWight reported last week, no Isle of Wight schools are affected by RAAC controversy, however, at the time of reporting that we also asked the IWC about other buildings they own and whether any of those contain RAAC.

They replied that no other IWC buildings contain RAAC, apart from This Heights which was built in 1983.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight council told News OnTheWight today (Tuesday),

“RAAC is present in a small area of the roof at The Heights.

“We’re fully aware of the situation and it’s being appropriately monitored and managed.”

They went on to add,

“As a council our priority must be for the safety of our residents and we would not hesitate in closing facilities should we have any concerns.

“As further mitigation, and in light of heightened sensitivities around the general presence of RAAC concrete, last week we instructed a further report of the affected area so we can be confident we have the most up-to-date information on the condition of the structure.”
