Rapanui: Eco Fashion We Like The Sound Of

Mart and Rob Drake Knight are two Island based brothers who really care about the world around them. They wanted to create a business that made a difference in environmental terms and set about trying to find environmentally sound clothing as an alternative to high street fashion.

The result is a clothing company called Rapanui.

They’ve started off with a fairly small product line, focusing on essential items such as boxers, vests and t-shirts, all made from eco-friendly, accredited fabrics. They only use 100% organic cotton, convergence cotton and sustainable coppiced bamboo (this is where you have to plant one for every one you cut down).

They continually monitor the environmental impact, all the way through the product life cycle, to ensure it is minimised. The products are manufactured by wind and solar renewable energy systems and any unavoidable emissions are offset elsewhere.

We think that what the lads at Rapanui are doing is a great step forward in changing people’s thinking and it has certainly inspired us to consider alternatives.

“The unique power of fashion can be used to create positive change, so Rapanui offers just that; the opportunity to extend green values into the clothes we wear and the products we buy”.

We wish the Mart and Rob the very best of luck in their contribution to making the Isle of Wight a true Eco Island.

We’re sure that if Joe Duckworth hasn’t got one of their t-shirts yet, he will do pretty soon.

The phrase “the often slumbering Isle of Wight” prompts me to ask if Dom speaks from the experience of currently living here?

It’s useful to know what geographical link someone has, when commenting on a locality.

That doesn’t quite answer my question, Kristen, but a big welcome to Dom in any case.

I hope this is clearer. Yes, like his grandparents and parents, at this very minute he lives on…and by that I mean resides in an abode affixed to the Sovereign land mass known as….the Isle of Wight. He also happens to be a very talented performing artist as well as writer.

Is it just me, or was that a bit of an impertinent question? I personally wouldn’t answer such a question without a sufficient explanation of the reason why it was asked first. I can’t imagine giving myself a different reaction to an item just because the writer was from another geographical location, or male/female, or any other classification. Writing is writing, and people are people. I’m reading… Read more »

Thank you Kel! And no Jonathan, I’m not like the mother in the book. It’s simply that we were introduced to a new (and I took it, a regular-to-be) contributor to the OTW team, and given that OTW is primarily about the Island, it’s interesting to know if Dom lives here, or is observing or visiting from further afield. It’s in the spirit of getting to know… Read more »

Yes I have learnt over the years that as some of us are ‘not born and bred islanders’, some people will never accept our views! I have never lived anywhere else and encountered this – Island living I guess!

I’m not born and bred either Richard! I wasn’t coming from that end of the stick.

I’ve never been to the Bestival, but I really enjoyed this review. I look forward to more of Dom’s contributions.

Excellent article. Well written and interesting.

One question… I couldnt give a damn where Dom is from, but I would like to know how often he will be contributing. Weekly? Monthly?
