Medina College continues to go from strength to strength and has seen an increase for the second year running in the number of students attaining five A* – C, including English and maths.

Headteacher Nathan Thomas said,

“I am incredibly proud of the students and staff at Medina and the College’s continued good progress. For the second year in a row, these results are really encouraging which is down to the commitment and hard work of the whole Medina community. The College continues to thrive and has all of the systems and staffing in place to continue to grow from September.”

Yet again, we had a large number of students attaining the very top grades and achieving results which will mean they are in an excellent position to apply for the top universities in a year’s time.

High achievers
Amongst our high achievers were twins Tom and Jack Maclean achieving an incredible 15 A* grades between them and Hermione Salter who gained a staggering 11A*s, two A’s and a B!

Other students who were delighted with their results were Sara Debrecini, Gareth Jones, Robbie Gwinnett, Ella Bartholomew, Harriet Powe and Harry Roberts who all achieved straight A* and A grades.

All of these students are moving on to the Island Innovation VI Form which also posted an excellent set of A-level results two weeks ago.

Bucking the national downward
Results in English were especially encouraging with the department bucking the national downward trend and posting results above the national average. Overall 51% of students achieved five A* – C GCSEs including English and maths.

Medina has achieved very strong results in the sciences, humanities and languages over the last three years and this trend has continued with these subjects all achieving pass rates in the high seventies and eighties and 100% of candidates passing Latin which we entered for the first time.

Exceptional A*-C results
There were exceptional A*-C results in photography (95%), graphics (97%) and music (100%), subjects that have large numbers of students taking them.

Music continues to be a huge strength at Medina with our Music Maestro programme for talented and able musicians entering its second year and an ever growing number of musical ensembles being established and opportunities for them to perform and grow as musicians.

Headteacher Nathan Thomas said,

“I am delighted with the results and the increase in progress at Medina, especially as OFQUAL has been warning schools to expect far higher grade boundaries in examinations this year. The staff at Medina have worked tirelessly to improve the quality of teaching so that these young people can succeed and our ambition to create a culture of sustainable improvement has proved successful and I am certain this pattern will continue over the coming years.”
