Red Funnel, the Southampton to Isle of Wight ferry company, has unveiled plans for an overhaul of its operations at the East Cowes port.
The proposed modifications are intended to enhance the resilience of Red Funnel’s operations, increase the punctuality and reliability of its services, alleviate local traffic congestion, and improve the passenger experience.
The plans concern Red Funnel’s three existing sites within East Cowes: Phoenix Yard, Trinity Yard, and Redux Yard.
Potential changes for East Cowes
The proposed alterations aim to minimise traffic congestion in the town centre, largely by rerouting embarking and disembarking ferry traffic via Well Road, rather than York Avenue.
The terminal building is suggested to move closer to the town centre, thus simplifying access to check-in for ferry traffic. This change will eliminate current confusion and conflicts with access to the floating bridge and the terminal building for drop-offs.
Accessibility for passengers is also set to be enhanced, with the introduction of new gangways and waiting areas for people with additional requirements. This will ensure passengers can embark and disembark in a safer and more efficient manner.
Economic boost for local area
Additionally, the proposed upgrades include a mixed-use development that will potentially feature homes, a hotel, and retail spaces. This aspect of the project promises to stimulate economic growth in the local area while creating a waterfront that can be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
Leanna Lakes, Operations Director at Red Funnel, said,
“We are proud that our port at East Cowes is a gateway to the Isle of Wight and are very conscious that alongside providing a lifeline service, we provide a welcome for locals and visitors alike.”
She further added,
“It’s essential that our operations remain resilient and meet the future needs of the communities and customers we serve.
“Over the last 12 months we have rigorously reviewed our plans and designs to make sure they provide the strongest outcome for East Cowes and the Island.”
A welcoming waterfront
Ms. Lakes stressed the importance of resilience and aesthetic appeal in the forthcoming plans,
“We know how important it is to build resilience whilst enhancing the overall look of the waterfront.
“Our plans to improve our marshalling facilities and access to our terminal align with the vision the Island strives to convey to visitors arriving from the mainland.”
