‘Refugees Welcome: No Human Is Illegal’ Isle of Wight mothers handcraft 16ft banner

Many thanks to Sara Watson, a member of the Unite the Isle of Wight Group, for sending over details of this event taking place on Saturday.

In response to distressing images in the media and a County Press poll which suggested a very negative view of refugees escaping war-torn Syria, a collective of Island women have been inspired to create an unusual five metre banner.

As a group of mothers, the women involved in the project felt that it was a way to express their solidarity with the refugees, and their hope that, were their own children fleeing violence or oppression, they would receive a compassionate response from those fortunate enough to live in a country at peace.

‘Refugees Welcome: No Human Is Illegal’
The banner, which has been hand knitted, crocheted, felted and stitched, carries the message ‘Refugees Welcome: No Human Is Illegal’, and is intended to reflect what the collective believes are the feelings of many generous and warm hearted Islanders, and with it the women hope to send a positive and welcoming message.

Come and show your support
The banner will be displayed in St. Thomas’ Square, Newport, this Saturday, 17th October, between 9.30am and 4.30pm and the makers hope that a large number of people will come along to have a look and show their support.
