The Isle of Wight is beginning to recover from what has felt like a deluge of rain over the past 12+ hours.
Several roads have been closed, with many affected by large amounts of surface water (see photos from Island Roads below). Some Islanders have reported flooding in their homes and the Isle of Wight College advised students to avoid travelling in.
Wallis: Some extremely challenging conditions
Dave Wallis, Island Roads operations and maintenance manager said,
“It has been an extremely busy time for our staff. The rainfall overwhelming watercourses and the high tide this morning presented some extremely challenging conditions.
“With tides now ebbing and the weather forecast showing little or no rainfall for the rest of the day, we are hoping that the worst of the current flooding is now behind us.”
Debris clear up underway
Due to the level of flooding witnessed in many parts of the Island, there will be debris left on the roads.
Operatives from Island Roads have already started their clear-up operation, with sweeping and cleansing teams out and about across the network
Wallis: Take extra care if travelling
Dave went on to add,
“Our teams are out across the Island monitoring the safety of the network and we are re-opening roads as soon as we are able.
“If residents need to travel, we would urge them to continue to take additional care as they move around the network.”
