Thanks to Roger Regular for this review of new Island band, Mercutios Plague. Ed
Platform One has another new group of talented individuals this year 2010/11.
I heard about this new band with a twist to its sound, metal joins Samba.
Strange? I hear you mutter. Knowing Seb was part of it, I was keen to see and hear this new band called Mercutios Plague.
I have been keen to see Seb in a band for a while, as I have always been impressed with his talent playing guitar and vocal ability with P1, a likeable character.
I since realised Ant has joined on bass, teaming-up with Seb, (things are looking good; I said to myself). Ant is in a couple of other bands as well as learning at P1, another, accomplished student.
So the full line up is Guitar/vocals – Seb, Bass – Anthony, Drums and assorted percussion – Shane, Drums and caixa (a traditional Brazilian samba drum) – Jake, Drums and Surdo (a traditional Brazilian samba drum) – Chris.
Variety of drums and guitars gives unique sound
All those drums and not a traditional drum kit used, well that’s different already. Seb and Ant are keen on metal style music with Shane, Jake and Chris more into the Brazilian Samba style or as I affectionately call it, Carnival music.
Shane, Jake and Chris are all in the Unidos Samba band, which perform all over the world but most will see and hear them in the carnivals around the Island. I love to hear and see all those drums beating out the Samba as they march/dance their way through the streets. As I said, this seems a strange combination, but it does work.
The metal side is not full-on, but leaning towards a more rock style, coupled with the drums of a Samba beat, really makes it a lively interesting sound, certainly new on me.
I watched and listened to the full set and wished they could play longer, but rules must be adhered to.
I will definitely see this band again and again, and recommend if you see their name in a town near you, go and have a look. Well done lads, see you soon.
