Sharing Heritage: Sandown Community Partnership celebrates a £6,800 Heritage Lottery Fund grant
This exciting project will create a brand new heritage trail in and around Sandown and will be led by the Sandown Community Partnership. The HLF grant will help the team to design the tour around town which will transport the walker back in time to discover Sandown’s fascinating past.
Involving the community
The Sandown Community Partnership is working alongside Ryde School with Upper Chine and its students, Sandown shopkeepers and business owners, local residents, authorities and the police to produce a signposted tour around Sandown’s life story all the way from its humble beginnings, through its military importance to its position as one of the leading holiday venues in England.
Commenting on the award, Andrew Vaughan, Project Co-ordinator on behalf of the Sandown Community Partnership, said:
“This award is fantastic news for Sandown and it is wonderful that so many people, especially youngsters, are going to be helping with the project. Sandown is a beautiful place and has such happy memories for so many people who took holidays here as children but has sadly suffered like many resorts in recent times. I’m certain that the boost this award will give the town can put some of the old sparkle back. I can’t wait to get started.”
Stuart McLeod, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund South East England, said:
“This project provides a wonderful opportunity for local people in Sandown to delve into their local heritage and we are delighted to be supporting the creation of the heritage trail.”
