Thanks to James Thompson from Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club for this latest report. Ed
Shanklin RC (Sponsored by Advanced Automotive) had triple success in the 3.5 mile Head of the River race last weekend (18th April) held on the Itchen river Southampton, which saw crews competing in two divisions.
Division one had 43 crews entered two of which were Shanklin crews. The Men’s Junior Four crew of Joe Robertson, Matt Miselbach, Harry Hopper, Harry Miselbach (Stroke) and Alex Robertson (Cox) rowed a good course and finished third in their status with a time of 16 minutes 45 seconds; just four seconds behind the winning crew of Christchurch A, making this another very close race with just seconds separating the top three.
Ladies Novice Four
The Ladies Novice Four Crew of Juliette Wrixon, Hannah Cusworth, Amber De Landro, Rebecca Nigh (Stroke) and Jaimey Wain (Cox) displayed excellent technique and managed to secure third place against 11 crews in their status with a time of 19 minutes 17 seconds behind the winning crew of Poole.
Both Coxes steered an excellent course on this notoriously tricky and hazardous course with strong head winds to battle against.
Shanklin under 16s
Division two saw 35 crews competing one of which was the Shanklin under 16s (J16) mixed quad of Joe Robertson, Jamiey Wain, Daisy Faithfull, Harry Miselbach (Stroke) and Alex Robertson (Cox). Starting last they managed to storm down the course overtaking several crews and finished with a time of 17 minutes 37 seconds. This time turned out to be the third fastest of the entire division and they were just three seconds behind the winning BTC Men’s Novice crew. A superb row in which they should be proud of.
This was the last of the head races and all crews now look forward to the first Coastal race in five weeks time. These close results will make for some interesting racing to look forward to in the coastal events.
