Earlier in the month, the national Charity Victim Support launched its manifesto for incoming Police & Crime Commissioners.
In response, Simon Hayes – standing as Independent candidate in Hampshire & the Isle of Wight said, “I believe there needs to be greater awareness of the effect of crime on the victim, their families and friends. Anyone who is unfortunate enough to be the victim of crime must be offered the right support in their time of distress.
“Fighting crime is not simply about catching the criminal, it’s also about ensuring victims and witness are supported in whatever way is right for them.”
Needs of victims and witnesses should be taken seriously
He went on to say, “Working collaboratively with organisations like Victim Support, the Police and Crime Commissioner will be in a position to champion the needs of victims and witnesses, make sure they are taken seriously and to ensure they are at the heart of policing across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
“Personally, I would want to see initiatives, like Restorative Justice, that have proven evidence based success rates to support victims and help prevent re-offending.”
