Work to improve the safety at Smallbrook roundabout near Ryde is nearing completion.
The final phase of the project involves the resurfacing of the carriageway on the approaches to the new, repositioned, roundabout. This resurfacing and the associated line markings will be undertaken at night as a full road closure is required.
Nighttime works
Currently, the plan is to carry out this work on the nights of 11th-14th April with the new improved junction being open for the Easter holiday period.
To help ensure that target is met, work will, during the resurfacing phase, be undertaken around the clock. Any changes to this programme will be publicised in advance.
The current daytime traffic arrangements will remain in place until the scheme is finished.
Diversions
The diversion route during the night-time closures is: For Westbound Traffic – Marlborough Road/Great Preston Road, Alexandra Road, St Johns Hill, St Johns Road, Green Street, West Street, Upton Road.
For Eastbound Traffic – Upton Road, West Street, Lind Street, Union Street, Esplanade Ryde, East Hill Road, Appley Road, Marlborough Road.
Why the works?
The Smallbrook project, being delivered by Island Roads for the Isle of Wight Council, is introducing several safety features at the junction which has been identified by accident data as a priority area for action.
Among the new features are the realignment of the junction’s approaches and introduction of new traffic Islands which will require traffic to slow down and negotiate the new roundabout rather than ‘straight-running’ across it.
Improved safety measures
Visibility on the roundabout approaches will also be improved, especially for traffic approaching from Smallbrook Lane and Carters Road.
There will also be additional streetlighting, a speed limit reduction from 40mph-30mph and anti-skid ‘slow down strips’ will be laid at the approaches to the new, realigned and relocated roundabout.
