Speedway: Islanders through to the playoffs

On the last day in terms of being able to secure qualification points for the end-of-season play offs, the Wightlink Islanders produced a highly professional and polished performance at King’s Lynn last night to romp to a 50-40 National League victory to book their place in them.

And whilst all six team members on view played their part, the undoubted star of the show was 16 year old reserve Adam Ellis, who has no chance of celebrating his simply stunning 19 (paid 20) score from his seven rides as he has to return to his schooling in France!

Adam is a member of our 2012 line up but his outings for us have been somewhat limited because his British parents have made their home in Marmande in the southwest of France where Adam was actually born.

Because of school holidays he was available to ride for us last night and he grabbed the chance with both hands.

Blown gasket for Stoneman
Not that it was a one man show by any means, for every other Wightlink Islander riding last night won a race, barring Danny Stoneman who suffered a blown head gasket on the new engine he bought for £1,000 last weekend!

Teenage star Ellis sat in second place behind skipper Danny Warwick for all four laps in the opening heat for a 5-1 advantage and from that point onwards the Wightlink Islanders were never seriously threatened.

Qualification was nigh on certain
By the end of the seventh race they had moved into an eight point lead and, bearing in mind their prime objective once they arrived at Saddlebow Road was to ensure that they at least secured one point by not losing on the night by more than six points, qualification for those play offs was nigh on certain even at the halfway point in last night’s match.

And victory on the night was cemented in heat 14 when Eliis took the chequered flag for a fifth time with team mate Steve Jones right behind him in second place.

In buoyant mood after the meeting co-boss Chris Hunt simply exclaimed, “mission accomplished!”

Thank you for this – almost as good as being there but not quite. Sadly not on the island at the moment. Excuse my ignorance but can I ask; Is the fort privately owned and when all the folk get there, are they allowed access or just a walk round the base? Next year perhaps……

The fort was on sale some years ago for $250k but I don’t think there were any takers. Physical Coastal defences were decommissioned in 1956. I have been inside years ago (I fort walked it in the 60s with my dad & 2 other friend * I visited by boat in the 80s. There used to be a rusty iron ladder since fallen off. It is utterly… Read more »
