Thanks to OnTheWight reader, Don Smith, for sharing this photo of a Superb Starling, taken by his Newport neighbour, Mrs Toogood.
He says the bird has been spotted in several parts of Newport over the last few weeks.
OnTheWight got in touch with the RSPB to ask how common it is to see this native of East Africa on our shores.
Keith Ballard, the site manager at RSPB Brading Marshes told OnTheWight,
“It’s certainly a Superb Starling and in the wild is resident and endemic to East Africa.
“The bird photographed is clearly an escape from a Zoo and has an identification ring of some kind on its leg.
“We suggest the observer contacts some of the local attractions such as Amazon World.”
