Step into the world of Britannia: Olivia Parkes art installation opens at Ventnor Fringe

Last updated:

Ventnor Fringe Festival is set to launch an exclusive site-specific art installation named ‘OLIVIA’.

Nestled in a public shelter near the serene setting of Myrtle Bay, the artwork promises to be a unique cultural experience for all who attend.

Life on stilts: Miss Olivia Parkes
OLIVIA captures the extraordinary tale of Miss Olivia Parkes, affectionately known to many as Britannia, who resided in a precarious, stilt-supported boathouse for close to four decades.

Her life, as unconventional as the dwelling she called home, becomes the centrepiece of this immersive installation by artists Teresa Grimaldi and Sarah Vardy.

Animated micro ‘vignettes’: Retelling a life
The creators have utilised animated micro ‘vignettes’, housed within a meticulously crafted replica of Olivia’s wooden boathouse.

These detailed fragments of Olivia’s life add depth to the storytelling, offering a captivating glimpse into the life and times of Britannia.

The spirit of Olivia: Living differently
Accompanying these vignettes are audio recordings, made by Ventnorians who recall Olivia’s life with clarity. These voices of the past paint a vivid portrait of a woman who dared to be different, embodying an enduring spirit that questioned societal norms.

Olivia’s life story begs us to consider our attitudes towards those who choose to step off the well-trodden path.

OLIVIA: More than an art installation
In addition to the installation, a dedicated gift shop is set to offer visitors a tangible memento of their visit.
