Following the tragic shooting on board HMS Astute earlier today, this statement just received from Chief Superintendent David Thomas provides more detail, in his own words. Ed
Hampshire Constabulary officers were called at 12:12pm today, following reports of an incident on board the nuclear submarine HMS Astute, which was visiting Southampton on a goodwill visit.
On board the submarine, a firearm had been discharged, which resulted in two crew members being injured. One of these injuries proved fatal.
Other victim stable
The other crew member was taken to hospital in Southampton with significant injuries. His condition is now described as stable.
A Home Office pathologist will conduct a post mortem examination on the person who died.
A man, also a member of the Royal Navy, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.
Investigation ongoing
Hampshire Constabulary’s Major Crime Department, with the support and co-operation of Ministry of Defence police and naval provost, are investigating.
The investigation initially involves treating all those on board as witnesses and we will be obtaining statements from all those on board – approximately 30 people.
Submarine security was not breached as part of this incident and it is not terrorist related. The vessel, which has been assessed by senior Naval personnel, is safe.
The port of Southampton is still fully functioning and operations are unaffected.
