Take part in Newport’s Christmas carol competition

Thanks to Paul for sharing details of this novel idea to liven up . Ed

On the evening of Thursday 13th December the crisp winter air around Newport town centre will be full of the magical sounds of Christmas.

To add some sparkle to the late night shopping that always takes place on Thursdays in December, Newport Business Association have come up with the wonderful idea of holding a Carol Competition with a difference.

Choirs sing with musicians
Dotted around Newport will be a variety of ensembles from folk bands to orchestras; a selection of Island choirs will make their way around the town taking it in turns to sing with each group of musicians. At the end of the evening all the performers will gather under the tree at St Thomas’ for one final rousing chorus of the evenings repertoire.

Organiser Paul Armfield said, “The hope is that the late night shoppers will hear Carols being sung and performed wherever they go. We hope to instil not just the spirit of Christmas but the spirit of community by bringing a wide range of Islanders together to enjoy the simple pleasure of singing and playing together. It will be a truly magical evening.”

Winning choir wins trophy!
There will also be an element of competition with a trophy being awarded to the winning choir, but the emphasis is on having fun!

Various choirs and bands have already signed up to take part, and any choirs or bands/ensembles wishing to join in the fun can obtain entry forms from Waterstones bookstore in Newport, closing date for entries is 18th November.
