A group of home”educated Isle of Wight young people have won a string of awards at the Land Rover Technology Challenge regional final.
The team, known as the “Manic Mechanics” had to build a radio”controlled model four wheel drive car and complete various challenges similar to those a real off road vehicle might face.
Their performance not only secured them a place in the national finals of the challenge, but also saw them receive three awards “ off the peg chassis class”winners, best track performance and the innovation and creativity award.
Learning Zone team
The team, Glyn, Freya, Ruth, Albie and Kerryn are all part of the Isle of Wight Learning Zone, a charity which provides support and networking for home educating families.
None of the team had entered the event before, and they have had to develop new skills very quickly, but despite this the Manic Mechanics fought off stiff competition from across the south of England.
Support for travel costs to finals needed
The Manic Mechanics now have just days to prepare their vehicle for the challenge of the national finals, to be held on Wednesday 13th July at the Coventry Transport Museum, and to raise the £300 needed to cover the costs of getting to the final.
They are appealing for local businesses or individuals to sponsor their entry into the national final.
