News that Ventnor’s Hambrough restaurant has had its Michelin Star ‘deleted’ from the 2014 Guide will be received by many with a heavy heart today.
The news won’t be a surprise to new chef Darren Beevers though, as he joined only a few months ago and wasn’t expecting to be able to retain the Star at such short notice.
Regaining the Michelin Star is definitely on his agenda, we’re told, so watch this space.
Background on The Hambrough’s Michelin Star
The Michelin Star was first awarded way back in 2009, with news of The Hambrough restaurant making it into the 2010 Michelin Guide leaked to The Sunday Observer newspaper.
Former Hambrough chef Robert Thompson, retained the Star for the restaurant for four years consecutively, but when Robert’s departure was announced in April 2013, it was clear to many that the star would be lost this year.
Rooting for Darren
As we understand it the Michelin star is awarded to a combination of the chef and the restaurant. When a chef leaves, the Michelin star is ‘deleted’ unless there is another inspection before the publication of the Guide and the new chef and restaurant meet the required standards.
Having a Michelin Star is not only good for the restaurant itself, but also the town it’s based in, so as we say above, many will be rooting for Darren and his team over the coming year.
