The Ventnor Film Society starts the new season of film at the Ventnor Winter Gardens with The Kite Runner.
Life is good in Afghanistan before the Soviet invasion in 1979, especially for the young Amir whose father is a wealthy merchant.
Amir’s only friend is the servant’s son Hassan -a minority Sh’ia Muslim. Hassan proves a faithful ally when they’re accosted by racist bullies, but in a later incident of shocking violence, Amir fails to stand by his friend.
The episode haunts him for years, even after he has emigrated to America.
It’s only when the Russians are driven out and the Taliban seizes power in Kabul that Amir dares to return and lay the past to rest.
This is a simple, down-to-earth story of good versus evil where basic themes of loyalty and integrity resonate
