The Phoenix is rising: Plans for Gurnard Pines revealed

Following the repossession of the main complex at the Gurnard Pines site at the end of last month, Terry Prosser from GUPI Properties Limited, announces the launch of two new companies.

The building is going to renamed “The Phoenix Centre” with the entertainment section of the property being taken over by Phoenix Knights.

They’re planning to provide ticketed entertainment such as comedy nights and dining experiences, initially running every fortnight with new dates coming soon.

Phoenix Zone
Mr Prosser explained that the Phoenix Zone Limited has taken over the gym sections of the property and will be launching soon with a view to opening up in early March, offering a range of classes.

“Both of these areas are currently undergoing significant improvements which will enhance the experience for all visitors.”

Goodbye to swimming
For those who used the pool at Gurnard Pines there is less good news.

Mr Prosser explained that the monthly running cost of the pool would be in excess of £230,000 a year and as it only generates £30,000 annually from swim schools and local clubs, it would result in an annual loss of around £200,000.

He said,

“After extensive research and speaking with potential tenants, it has become apparent that the swimming pool is simply too expensive to retain because with utility costs rising again in April once the government discount ceases.

“The use by previous gym members was a very small proportion and whilst we have done our best find a way of retaining the pool, we felt that the increase required in membership fees would be so excessive, the public simply would not be able to afford it just cover costs.”

Lots of options in the melting pot
The pool area will be re-purposed as a multi-functional area and they’re investigating how the space can be best used.

Mr Prosser finished by saying,

“We have lots of options in the melting pot and some of the options we are considering are squash, badminton, basketball, indoor football, futsal and instructor-led exercise training.”
