The remarkable story of Joe Carstairs unfolds in captivating theatrical production

StoneCrabs Theatre is thrilled to announce the highly anticipated arrival of Joe Carstairs at Quay Arts. This captivating theatrical production had great reviews in London and is coming to the Island  for just three nights, 3rd to 5th July 2024.

Who was Joe Carstairs?
This show introduces a fascinating, Isle of Wight LGBTQ+ character from the1920s. The ‘fastest woman on water’, a triumphant boat racer who had a boatyard in East Cowes and lived proudly and authentically.

Joe defied gender norms and expectations and appeared to enjoy every minute. She was blessed with wealth, charm and a seemingly unshakeable self-belief. Joe had a glamorous life and numerous lovers including Marlene Dietrich and Dolly Wilde, niece of Oscar Wilde.

A play within a play
Franko Figueiredo and Krysia Mansfield’s play, directed by Selwin Hulme-Teague and Robyn Lexi, is not a piece of biographical theatre, but a play within a play as Carstairs’ story is interwoven with that of the fictional Hik, a queer Gen-Z playwright who is researching Carstairs and writing a play about her life.

Hik finds themselves at odds with much of Carstairs’ story too. The two are separated not just by a century, but by economics and, to at least some degree, by their ethics and outlook on life too.

Mesmerising performances
Expect mesmerising performances by Rhiannon Bell as Joe Carstairs, Sarah Carvalho, Jazz Harbour, Krysia Mansfield and Catherine Warnock the play brings to life the glamour, speed, and unapologetic spirit of the trailblazing icon.

They capture the essence of Carstairs’ vibrant life with authenticity and flair.

Joe Carstairs promises to inspire, entertain, and leave a lasting impact on all who witness its magic.
