Top Island Gardners To Receive RecognitionThe winners from many entries to this year’s Wight in Bloom competition will be revealed this coming weekend.

On Saturday 14 August, several prizes will be presented at The Riverside Centre in Newport at a ceremony between 10am and noon.

Amongst the prize categories this year include best community project, best cottage garden and five special recognition awards.

The competition, which is supported by Wightlink, began in the 1980s and this year attracted 87 entries from across the Island.

Once again judges were impressed by the efforts of Islanders who have maintained their displays through all types of weather, ranging from severe snow in January to high temperatures in the summer.

Wight in Bloom Co-ordinator Andrew McIntyre from Isle of Wight Council said: “What makes Wight In Bloom so special is that it encourages everyone from homeowners to schools and community groups to local businesses to maintain their gardens for the enjoyment of others.

“What was very satisfying about this year is that we saw a record number of entries in the best initiative involving a young person category and the standard was brilliant.

“It goes to prove gardening remains a very popular activity amongst all ages”

Isle of Council Leader David Pugh said “Every year the standards seem to get better and I want to offer my congratulations to everyone who entered. I know that the judges had a really difficult time choosing the winners”
