THE CHAIRMAN of the International Island Games Association and members of its Committee will be visiting the Isle of Wight this weekend where they will get to meet Islands young sporting stars of the future.
Jorgen Pettersson and the other members of the ten-strong committee are holding their latest meeting on the Isle of Wight as part of the run up to the 2011 Island Games which will take place here on the Island.
During their visit, they will meet with the Isle of Wight 2011 organising committee and sports coordinators including the chairman of the Island Games Association David Ball and council leader and cabinet member for leisure Councillor David Pugh.
The committee will be guests of Isle of Wight Council on Friday evening (March 28) and on Sunday (March 30) will visit some of the Isle of Wight’s sports facilities as well as meeting individual sports co-ordinators.
On the Saturday, Mr Pettersson will be visiting the Islands new Sports Development Academy at Medina Leisure Centre where he will be met by Cllr Pugh, the council’s Community Development Manager Lee Matthews and Mr David Ball.
The group will then make their way down to the sportshall where they will have the opportunity to observe some of the academy activities, meet the children and discuss the programme with the coaches and volunteers. The academy is aimed at supporting and developing our Island’s future sports stars by providing specialist coaching in a wide range of activities.
Cllr Pugh said: “The Island Games in 2011 represents a fantastic opportunity for Isle of Wight young people to get involved in sport at every level.
“We are pleased and honoured that Jorgen and the other members of the committee are coming to the Isle of Wight this weekend and will show them how seriously both the council and the Island Games Association here are taking our preparations to hold the event in 2011.”
