Triple success for Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club

Thanks to James for this latest report from the Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club. Ed

There was another triple success for Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club at the Hants & Dorset ARA Swanage Regatta on Saturday 27th June.

The first final of the day saw the J16 girls Juliette Wrixon, Daisy Faithfull, Amber De Landro, Sophie Swallow (stroke) and Cox Hannah Cusworth up against crews from Itchen Imperial, BTC & Poole. The Shanklin girls had a good start and found themselves fighting for the lead against a determined BTC crew, but kept the pressure on and rowed ahead to take the first win of the day by a few lengths over BTC.

The Shanklin J16 composite crew in the boys final saw Andrew Swallow, Stefan Drews, Liam Nigh, Daisy Faithfull with Anja Bennett (cox) against two Poole crews, BTC & Christchurch where they rowed a competitive race but finished in fourth place.

Novice A Men at Swanage Regatta

The Ladies Novice Fours qualifying heat saw our “A” crew of Juliette Wrixon, Hannah Cusworth, Amber De Landro, Sophie Swallow (stroke) and Jaimey Wain (cox) rowed a superb and well controlled race winning the heat convincingly by five lengths over the following competitors.

Later in the day the girls were lined up in a six boat Final and from the start up to the buoy turns all crews were level. The Shanklin boat got round their buoy first and rowing with style they took command all the way back to the finish line to take their first Regatta win of the season beating Lymington and the Itchen crews by two lengths. This superb win now gives the crew their Junior status they have been longing for all year, well done girls!

Ladies Novice A Class at Swanage Regatta

The Men’s Junior Fours crew of Henry Mudge, Henry Gove, Jamie Gamble, Jaimey Wain, with Anja Bennett (cox) had their first row in this Status having won the Novice final at Woolston the previous week. In a six boat heat they rowed well, but just missed out on qualifying for the Finals.

The Men’s Novice “A” crew also rowed well in their qualifying heat but were out of contention for a place in the finals.

Shanklin’s Senior Pair of Alex Robertson and Joe Evans-Murray rowed solidly in their heat to finish second and qualify for the six boat final where they had a great row and took the third place podium finish.

Alex Robertson Senior Sculls Winner

Joe Evans-Murray had his first sculling race at Junior status after winning Novice the week before. He rowed a good strong race but unfortunately just missed out on a podium finish.
The third win of the day came from Alex Robertson who had just started competing at Senior level this year.

He competed in a six boat final with some well experienced oarsmen and as the race progressed Alex made an excellent buoy turn at the halfway point of the course and forged ahead all the way back to the finish line to take a comfortable three length win. This is his first Senior Sculls win for him and also the Club for many years!
