Undercliff Drive

‘Do you have somewhere else to stay?’ Undercliff Drive residents asked as further cracks appear

Residents living on Undercliff Drive were shocked to receive a late night visit from IWC officers last night (Wednesday), advising them of new cracks in the road since the dramatic landslip at the weekend (pictured above).

Officers asked how many people lived in the property, if any residents had medical conditions and whether residents had somewhere else they could stay. We’re told the officers kept saying, “no need to worry”, but residents were asked to keep an eye on how the cracks are developing.

Vehicles may be restricted
A letter was left with residents, from Bill Murphy, head of planning at IWC, advising that Island Roads and IWC will monitor the cracks in Undercliff Drive, which the council say they “believe” to be down to prolonged rainfall.

Mr Murphy goes on to say in his letter it may be necessary for the IWC to restrict vehicle access to properties on that section of the road.

Residents are asked to contact Building Control at IWC if they notice any signs of movement in their properties or gardens.

Ongoing works
As readers will remember, the road closed in November 2013 for a six month programme of geotechnical works to strengthen the road.
