Great news in from Jack Whitewood of the Ventnor Fringe Festival. Ed
Following the huge success of the first Ventnor Fringe Festival, created entirely by a team of full time students, we are delighted to announce that we are set to return, more daring and creative than ever, in 2011.
The Festival saw sold out shows from the likes of musicians including Johnny Flynn, Karen Tweed and Jackie Oates performing intimate concerts, prolific film Director Vincent Moon running a unique cinema space with the talented cellist Gaspar Claus and children’s puppetry from Hand to Mouth Theatre to name just a few.
Taking place between 17th and 20th August 2011, once again coinciding with the Ventnor Carnival celebrations, the Ventnor Fringe Festival is set to expand to include an even more varied program of artists from near and far.
What’s it all about?
Inspired by the world famous Edinburgh Fringe, anyone can apply to perform at the festival, with any genre or discipline, from a full length stage play, to a stand up routine, short film to craft work.
The Fringe then helps applicants to host their own event under the collective banner of the Fringe. Opportunities also exist for buskers, street artists and workshop leaders.
Plans to develop festival
Festival Director Jack Whitewood said, “We want to create a festival unlike anything the Island has seen before. We plan to develop the Fringe not just as a place of entertainment but a space where new ideas are discussed and experimented with, a hotbed for new work in all creative disciplines and a space where the issues of the day can be debated and discussed, it’s all about creating a centre of wellbeing, learning and enrichment.”
Come along to launch nights
Applications to perform will open on January 8th 2011 and to celebrate, we’ll be hosting an intimate launch event in Ventnor at the El Toro Contento Tapas Bar over the 7th and 8th January.
Expect free debates, live music and spoken word as well as an opportunity to meet the team behind the event. For more information on the festival please visit the official Ventnor Fringe Festival Website.
