UKSA is proud to announce the opening of its new education centre, Victoria Barracks, in East Cowes, marking a significant milestone in the charity’s mission to inspire young people and deliver world-class maritime education and training.
From barracks to classrooms
The historic site has been transformed into a dedicated maritime education facility, creating additional capacity for training, skills development and community engagement.
The centre will enable UKSA to support more young people and professionals into maritime careers, while also providing much-needed facilities to help children and families enjoy and connect with the sea.
Royal opening ceremony
The site was formally opened on Monday 3rd August 2026 during a special ceremony attended by UKSA’s Royal Patron, HRH The Princess Royal accompanied by Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.
The opening of Victoria Barracks is the culmination of several years of planning, partnership and investment. The project has been delivered by UKSA in collaboration with the Isle of Wight Council and made possible through a combination of public funding, philanthropic support and charitable giving.

Catherine Dixon, CEO of UKSA, said,

“Victoria Barracks will help more people experience the transformational power of the sea, opening up opportunities and widening access to maritime education and careers for people from all backgrounds.”

By increasing capacity and extending access to maritime experiences and training, Victoria Barracks will help ensure that more children and young people can discover their potential, build confidence and enjoy the life-changing opportunities that the sea can provide.
