We were contacted by Dave Sunnucks of the Caulkheads pub in Sandown this afternoon to let us know that they’d been scammed by two people coming into their pub asking for change of some twenty pound notes.
In the trade, it’s called the Change Raising Tactic. First they ask for change, then ask for it to be changed again. While this is going on, they confuse the person they going to scam.
The ‘clever’ part is that they walk away with their ill-gotten gains, but the person who has been scammed has no idea that they’ve been ripped off.
Watch the video
The video below shows you how it’s done and frankly, even after watching the video, knowing it’s a scam, we couldn’t immediately see how it worked. Given this, it’s completely understandable that people are getting diddled by this.
Two men scammed the Caulkheads pub in Sandown. One of them was about 5’5”, of slight build with dark curly hair, but balding. The other bloke was thick-set – chatting while the scam went on.
Watch out
We know of at least one other Island business that has been hit by this during this week, so if someone comes in asking for change – be on your guard.
As we reported back at the end of August, there’s been a spate of Cashpoint scams on the Island too. All very unusual for the Isle of Wight, isn’t it?
