West Wight Gets the Wow Factor

Thanks to Krissy for this latest news from Freshwater. Ed

Events and activities galore are being planned for a special week long celebration of the communities of Freshwater and Totland this Easter.

Week Out West is a collaboration between the two parish councils, West Wight Police, the Youth Service, and West Wight Sports Centre. It’s being held between 8th and 13th April.

Wide range of activities
Youngsters will have the chance to become a CSI with the police forensic team, or take part in workshops ranging from photography and circus skills, to dance and drama. The Youth Centre is open on the Monday and Thursday for free.

An older persons lunch is taking place on the Thursday at the Memorial Hall, while the Oasis café and Community Club will be open at the Community Centre in Moa Place during the week. At the sports centre there will be a packed programme of sporting activities.

Special family event
The event culminates with a special celebration on Jubilee Field on the Saturday where there will be local bands playing, an Easter parade, dog show, youth football festival, Fun Fair, Zumba, market stalls and much more. The FYT bus will be operating during the day to ensure everyone can get to the festivities.

Wight Trash will be running a competition; sponsored by the Isle of Wight Youth Service, at the skate park for skateboarders, scooters, blades and BMX riders. There will also be the chance to see the pros showing off their skills, as several of the Wight Trash Team Riders will be making an appearance.

Celebrating the local community
“After the success of the Diamond Jubilee Day last year we wanted to put on something even bigger and better in 2013” says Krissy Lloyd from the WOW steering committee. “It’s all about celebrating the local community, and we’ve had a great response from groups and organisations. Even the logo has been designed by members of the West Wight Youth centre.”

Be part of the event
There’s still plenty of time to get involved if you are part of a local community group. Contact the organisers at [email protected].
