Thanks to Mark Bailey for sending through this intriguing article. Does this confirm rumours of a challenge to Red Funnel’s domination of the lucrative Cowes – Southampton route? Ed
The Floating Bridge was seen crossing the Solent today.
The MCA could only confirm that the floating bridge had indeed been seen crossing the Solent, further fuelling rumours about the possibilities of a cheaper and more cost effective alternative to Red Funnel’s services.
“Off to lay some chain”
Engineers and workmen in marine engineering facilities in Cowes have been heard saying “off to lay some chain”¦” could this also confirm this extraordinary new facility for Islanders to get off the Island for less? That’s an awful lot of chain!
The local Council declined to comment when questioned about the issue of waterproofs for winter services and the whether foot passengers would still travel for free.
More shoppers for Waitrose?
Waitrose could see only advantages in the facility – bringing more ‘visitors’ to the Island – as long as the service docked in the shopping metropolis of East Cowes first before heading over to West Cowes.
When asked if he would use the service, local businessman Mark Bailey of Bailey Creative Support for Business said he welcomed the idea and, as a coach for Vectis U11 Rugby, could see it as a great facility for cash strapped Island clubs travelling to the mainland, “So long as Vectis Rugby club could reserve it for their away matches, I think it’s a great idea!”
