Beryl e-scooters lined up outside hospital

Will the Isle of Wight electric scooter scheme get extended?

The National Government has decided they would like extend the end date of e-scooter trials across the country until 31st March 2022.

It’s all part of their attempt to try out different forms of transport – which have been wildly popular in some cities.

Beryl are the company that’s carrying out the trial here on the Isle of Wight. News OnTheWight asked them their view on the Government’s plan to extend.

Beryl: Keen to continue
They told us, as the Island trial was a collaboration with IWC council they weren’t able to decide independently, but given the opportunity, they’d be keen to continue.

When we approached the Isle of Wight Council a spokesperson said,

“No decision has yet been made in respect of extending the e-scooter trial beyond the original 12 months.”

Launched in December 2020, the trial has had mixed reactions – some loving them, others not.

They have had some success in other parts of the country where they have worked well. As an example, according to the BBC many used them to get to the England cricket matches as they could be left directly outside the ground so were cost effective and helped people avoid using cars and parking charges. This would seem sensible to me. I can’t see benefit on the… Read more »

lets hope the new council has the common sense to see the total disaster of scooters on the isle of wight. The regulation of their use is totally not done by Beryl and left to the police who have far more important things to do, so they are not being monitored or regulated. How long before someone gets seriously injured or killed. The parking bays even if… Read more »

I’m undecided about the benefit/harm of escooters, but much of the commentary around them shows just how blind we are to the damage done by use/abuse of cars. lets hope the new council has the common sense to see the total disaster of cars on the isle of wight. The regulation of their use is totally not done by Ford, Citroen etc. and left to the police… Read more »

Given the reckless and dangerous way some are riding the scooters I can’t wait to see how they do when loaded down with shopping and a couple of kids hanging on behind. Still, it’s a softer landing if you can arrange to fall on the kids I suppose. Oops – did you forget that?

I’ve never used one of these scooters. I doubt I ever will. But then I don’t imagine that I’m typical of the target demographic! In the last few days I’ve witnessed cars dangerously “close-passing” cyclists. I’ve seen a motorcycle (on “L” plates) ridden with a helmet-less pillion passenger. I’ve seen (and heard!) mopeds racing around the streets with little regard for the safety or peace of others.… Read more »

They are dangerous and their use and abuse well documented.
