Worrying trend as number of registered sex offenders increases

New stats released by the Ministry of Justice this week show that in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, there are 101 registered sex offenders per 100,000 population.

The Multi Agency Public Protection (MAPPA) Annual Report for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight (see below) sets out the background for the number of Registered Sexual Offenders in the area.

No Isle of Wight breakdown
OnTheWight researched the data and attempted to get specific numbers for the Isle of Wight, but the Ministry of Justice were unable to provide a breakdown.

For context, Hampshire’s population is around 1.6m, whilst the Isle of Wight is around 140,000.

NSPCC: “A prolific problem”
On release of the new statistics, an NSPCC spokesperson told OnTheWight,

“It’s good that more of these individuals are being put on the list of registered sex offenders, but it’s worrying that this is such a prolific problem, as many of these offenders will be paedophiles.

“In just ten years, the number of registered sex offenders has risen by 73% and these latest figures mean that nearly one in every 1,000 people in England and Wales is on the register.

“A trend towards more survivors of sex abuse being willing to come forward is encouraging. But there is no room for complacency and it is important to report signs of sexual abuse when they occur.”
