WOWFest Organisers Failing To Return Deposits

At least two businesses that had paid deposits to the organisers of WOWFest have told VentnorBlog that the deposits they paid haven’t been paid back.

cancelled:Arthur who runs a fairground contacted VB asking if we had any way of getting in touch with the WOWFest organisers, Phil and Geri. The phone numbers he had weren’t being answered. He told us that he had put an £1,800 deposit down.

A second company
VB also spoke to Barry who has been running the food stall, Goodness Gracious, at festivals for 25 years. He told us that he’d put a £600 deposit down and not been able to get a response from Phil and Geri even going to the length of visiting addresses on the Island that he had been told they had lived.

Barry said he’d rung up the Police about it and “considered it a crime”.

History
Police called for license of WOWFest cancelled near the start of June. The event organisers then issued a statement that it was ‘Postponed’

In that statement they said, “Ticket holders for WOWfest 2012 will be refunded.”

Their own fault, there have been plenty of warnings but I suppose the chance of making a fast buck over rides sensibility. If they think they have a chance of getting it back. They might just as well sh!t in their best hat.

so… hang on, these people gave a deposit in good faith to run food, fairgrounds and presumably other things too at a festival… and because they took the organisers at their word, you think they are so stupid that they should lose their money, or “sh!t in their best hat” as you so eloquently put it? May I say that you, sir, are an arse, and Im… Read more »

Perhaps they could have done their research beforehand, but at the same time, these kind of businesses live off of summer festivals, they are going to try and find and best the cheapest and best plot to sell on, WowFest was obviously one of those plots. If perhaps they were Island businesses, then they may have had a lot of warning, but it can be assumed that… Read more »

Don’t they have the internet on the mainland?
Whilst I have some sympathy for these service providers, a very cursory search would have revealed information which would certainly make you think twice before laying down your deposit. :-s

Thats hardly fair…The council and licensing should never have granted them permission thus giving them credibility and piece of paper they could present to investors which said the council was allowing this to happen.

A lot of the burden of this (again) falls on the councils doorstep

I believe it was the current chair of the council, Susan Scoccia, who headed the licensing committee that granted WowFest the license.

Wow Festivals Ltd (Limited company No 07010669) could have problems in fulfilling their financial obligations now that public opinion has has stopped the Festival. The company must have spent a fortune in advertising and set-up costs etc up to the point of cancellation.Another fine mess you have got us into P&G. I don’t see how the police could be involved, because the operators fully intended to deliver… Read more »

Fully intended to deliver a festival? How so when they obviously knew that they could make the advanced payments? They were even offering reduced price tickets with a dead-line of May 30th to try and entice people into buying BEFORE they were sure that it could go ahead. Police or at the very least, trading standards should be looking into this.

All in good time

I would say to Bluey though that the police did not ‘pull the plug’…They presented the organisors with a bill for policing in line with usual practice. The organisors where unable to meet that requirement and requested a new figure for a lower attendence, which they were given. They were still unable to meet that obligation so pulled the event themselves

Firstly it was reported that John Giddings had reneged on his promise to refund ticket holders money, now Phil and Geri have joined the list with their broken promise of repaying traders deposits, and next it will be reported that ticket holders are also complaining of the same thing. I wonder how many others will contribute to the bad publicity brigade, in blighting the reputation of the… Read more »

….oh dear, spoke too soon – difference being that John Giddings put on a VERY successful and widely acclaimed and much-enjoyed Festival – this gruesome twosome never got their act together and were doomed the minute they stuck a pin in the Shanklin Area Map……

Hardly, this festival was reportedly the quietest yet, many gave up and tickets went unsold. Not very successful in many peoples eyes.

do you live in a dream world…65,000 tickets sold
Loads of people left Sunday Morning…loads of people bought their tickets and went sunday only…its the same every year.

The organisation on Thursday was a monumental cock up, the weather bad, the festival fantastic…just watch some of the videos on the music sites

I knew it wouldn’t last! No.5, I think even you will agree that this years IOW festival has been seen to be not as successful as previous ones. I’m interpreting the word ‘successful’ by the way, as everyone (including locals) going away happy. We both know that that wasn’t the case this time. But lets not divert from the topic at hand… at least it looks like… Read more »

Im glad this was mentioned. I notice william was registerd as the accountant, connected with a lot of failed businesses it appears. Cant understand how he loses so many buinesses being a chartered accountnt. Did anyone notice he got the licence for the newport bar the day after WOWfest missed the payment deadline? the guy has too much money to throw away it seems.

Remember that the other directors are as responsible including “Baron” William Tudour Louie Smith, who is located at Spithead Business Centre, Lake Rd…….he provided the offices for WOWfest and presumanbly has a forwarding address. Why on earth did the Council let it get this far? The organsers track record was clearly far from perfect. The Licensing Authority should surely have run credibility checks on their bank accounts and run a keen eye over their business plan. Instead they let it bumble on until for some hardworking, presumably self employed sole traders it’s too late and the innocent are robbed of their… Read more »

Snellen and Ward live at Southlands Rd, won’t give full address but the queue of large leather jacket wearingt debt collecting gentlemen should suffice. If this is correct, then after deduction of sales commission, the net sum would not have even covered the policing and health costs. The traders who paid deposits and the ticket purchasers may be waiting a long time to get their money back … How many other unpaid accounts will surface?

“Barry said he’d rung up the Police about it and “considered it a crime”.

It’s a civil offence of breach of contract, not a criminal offence so the police will not be interested unless it can be proven that they intended to fraud. This would be a criminal offence but would be very difficult to prove.
