We’re really pleased that VB reader, Pete from Gurnard has taken up the gauntlet and sent us his Pick of the Week to share with you all. If you’d like to do the same, get in touch through the contact form. Ed
I’ve been reading the blog for nearly two years now and have been amazed by the diversity of content that the guys over there seem to knock out. The question my wife and I always ask ourselves is ‘how do they always seem to know what’s going on?’
I for one am glad, because it means that if there is something worth seeing or going to, I know it’ll be covered on the blog.
However, sometimes, knowing about all the things going on around the Island is a bit like rubbing salt into the wounds, because last week, I couldn’t get out much. Every day I was reminded about all the good events that I was missing out on.
Such as the great lineup at Acoustics Originals. Having seen Paul Armfield play the previous Friday night, I was looking forward to seeing him perform with others at Quay Arts on Monday night. Never mind, hopefully I can make it to the one next month.
I suppose the big news for the Island last week, although you wouldn’t think it if you’d read the County Press, was that the council have decided to scrap the Undercliff Drive scheme. I’ve been following this subject with interest, as I consider Undercliff Drive one of, if not the most, beautiful parts of the Island. We drive down regularly to take in the glorious green tunnels which seem to look amazing what ever the weather or time of year. We definitely joined those celebrating on Tuesday night, after following the live report from County Hall, except we didn’t have any champagne, so had to make do with a glass of port each instead.
Talking of politics, I was amazed to hear last week that a vacancy on Ventnor Town Council has attracted no less than five potential candidates for the role. According to Simon, this is the most highly contended he Island has ever known. Looks to me like the good people of Ventnor might have just realised that people power can work and want to be part of it.
My busy week extended into the weekend, and although I had planned a visit to Ventnor on Saturday to see the unveiling of a blue plaque at the house where Elgar stayed for his honeymoon, sadly I couldn’t make it down.
But as usual, it looks like Sal and Simon were on the scene, not only providing a write up, but also putting out an interview and photos.
My final pick of the week has to be the interview with Chas from Chas n Dave. It was a brilliant gig, great foot tapping stuff and well worth the trip down to Ventnor for. I was good to hear more of the background of his life, other than what he spoke about during the gig.
There you have it. A bit of a mixed bag, but that’s what we always get and have come to expect from the blog.
