I wrote to Simon Hayes shortly after his election asking him why the Isle of Wight police had allowed themselves to get involved in David Pugh’s election stunt before Christmas. That’s the one where benefit fraud investigators were allowed to question people stopped in supposedly random vehicle checks. The one in which “honest, hard-working families” had nothing to worry about.

It was a perfectly well-reasoned and polite letter, but I didn’t get an answer. I conclude that Mr Hayes is less interested in the views of the public now that he’s been elected than he was before. He may do a better job than the expenses cheat he beat – his fellow Conservative Michael Mates – but I’m not holding my breath.
