Ryde Harriers keep on running

Thanks to Tom for these latest reports from the Ryde Harriers running groups. Ed

Island athletes gathered recently for the annual 5k track championship at Fairway Sports Centre. On a hot night for running Paul Cameron once again triumphed for the men with Sarah Kavanagh also continuing her winning form in the women’s competition.

Paul completed the 12.5 laps in 17.16 with Tom Blackwell second in 18.20 and Justin Fitzgerald third in an excellent time of 18.44. Sarah’s winning time was 20.31 with Emily crossing in second with a time of 22.25 and Amanda Threadgold third in 23.52.

The best battles of the event came in the vets categories with Pete White showing really strength to hold off a challenge from Pete Jollife for the vet 60 prize.

Pete J. was cruising up on the inside with 70 metres to go before Pete W. dug deep to push on. In the vet 70 category brand new vet 70 Jonathon Norton took on old stager Steve Lee and Lee was delighted to give the young pretender a whipping of over half a lap to take the crown once again.

The IW 10k championship takes place at the same venue next Tuesday 29th July with entries open to all for just £1 and the race starting at 7.30pm.

Ryde Harriers summer series continues apace with a couple of events to catch up on news-wise. It was another double-up of multi-terrian events with one in Sandown and another in Ryde. Over in Sandown runners attempted the Winford loop, one of the more flattish courses Paul Charlton-Smith devises.

The nominated time win went to the husband and wife team of Bridget and Andy Lewis who continue to show brilliant pacing skills to take more points whilst first home was Rod Parker. Ryde runners took on the 5.7 mile Seagrove Saunter featuring the lovely hill up from Seagrove Bay. Nomination points here went to Elaine Parry whilst Pete Still crossed the line first in 41.26.

Ryde Harriers meet every week on a Tuesday at Ryde Rowing Club with runs starting at 7.30pm plus in Sandown for track events and multi-terrain over the summer. New members are always welcome. The next race event is the IW Half-Marathon on Sunday August 17th with a 5k fun run for the IW Youth Trust as well.
