Island Rowing Teams - Young Competition

Young rowers put their sporting skills to the test

Thanks to Alex Robertson from Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club for this report sent on behalf of the Isle of Wight Rowing Forum (all three clubs).

All three Island rowing clubs met at Ryde Rowing Club for the Isle of Wight Rowing Forum junior indoor rowing competition. The competition included three individual events, a timed row, a 250m sprint and a 50m sprint and twenty four young rowers took part.

Lewis Jenkins of Shanklin took the win in the year 8 boy’s event. Meanwhile in the year 10 boy’s event Will Edwards of Newport took victory.

In the girl’s combined year 9, 10 and 11 event, Newport’s Tabitha Hayden took the win.

In an event contested only by Ryde rowers, Ben and Joel took the joint win in the year 11 boy’s event.

In the Year 12 boy’s Tom Leaver of Shanklin took the win, before James Smith of Ryde won the year 13 boy’s event.

The day was concluded with a relay event where all the rowers split into teams with the ‘C team’ taking the win. The event was a fantastic showing of the young talent all three clubs have, as well as the effectiveness of the forum, as the event once again ran without hitch, especially thanks to the efforts of Stuart Johnson.
