Beynon Statement on Chiverton Case

Beynon Statement on Chiverton CaseFurther to our report earlier this morning in which Labour Parliamentary candidate Mark Chiverton told us that he had been told to stand down or resign from his post, we’ve just received the response below from the Chief Executive, Steve Beynon.

“The council has not told Mark that he must either resign his job, or stand down as a candidate.

“However it has to be remembered that Mark’s salary as a full time union official is met by the IW Council. Consequently, as employers, we have asked Mark to confirm that he intends to stand at the forthcoming general election and, if so, how he anticipates his campaigning will affect the time he is able to spend on work for which he is paid out of the public purse.

“Until we have had a discussion with Mark over his plans and availability for work during an election period, we cannot say what stance the council may take.

“The council, cannot by law do anything that provides support for a political party and there are also other factors the council must consider in its role as an employer.

“Rather than discuss this in detail through the media, the council – which I stress has not issued an ultimatum to Mark – will be sitting down with him to discuss this matter and I am hopeful we can arrive at a solution that is acceptable to all parties.”

Naturally we’ve attempted to contact both Mark Chiverton and his agent Geoff Lumley, as the two of these statements (his and Steve Beynon’s) appear so far apart. We will update when we hear back.

Update: It might be useful to point out that as far as we’re aware, this action has nothing to do with The Leader or any other councillors.

This should be a matter between Mark and the council officers involved.

The handling of staff and day-to-day running of the council is down to the officers “¦ and councillors are strictly forbidden to be involved with the execution. Their role is to set policy.

If this is the case why didn’t David Pugh deny it on the radio?

Benyon and Pugh would make a great Ventriloquist act. Can just see a little Steve sitting on Davids Knee.

Steve if you are genuinely worried about the public purse why don’t you cut your ridiculous annual wage down £140,000 to a more reasonable figure (£30k)?

Well said Sir. If some of these outrageous salaries were cut then it would mean more cash for some of the services that are proposed to receive massive cuts.

Interesting that Mr. Beynon uses the phrase “the council” so much. An interesting question would be has an officer or a councillor said to Mark Chiverton that he needs either to stand down as candidate or resign from his post? Maybe “The Council” (corporate) hasn’t said anything at all but individuals have! Hasn’t Mark Chiverton been the candidate for ages? Why have people running the Council only… Read more »

A good Conservative Council would get a new Leader in as soon as possible to steady the ship.

I don’t think it is a publicity stunt. The council just didn’t expect him to tell people what was happening (widower with kids, he’ll need his salary and all that) but he’s called their bluff This comment is interesting from Mr Beynon “Until we have had a discussion with Mark over his plans and availability for work during an election period, we cannot say what stance the… Read more »

In my opinion Steve Beynon will be the ruination of the Island.Isle of Wight Councillors have a deplorable record selecting Chief executives.I thought they had reached a new low when the Conservatives aided by Labour councillor Deborah Gardiner who seconded his appointment saying Mr Duckworth is a outstanding candidate in a strong field.Only one thing these two have been good at is screwing us Council tax payers.

What can I say George – I hold my hands up. For a wide variety of reasons I wished we’d made a different decision on that appointment panel (which was cross party, not just me and the Tories). And Mr Duckworth WAS a very good candidate at the interview – but as it turned out…. (I am sure you can fill in the gaps).
