Have you received a call offering you a refund on your council tax?
If you have, hopefully you won’t have paid the £75 that it’s being requested by the Indian call centre that has nothing to do with the Isle of Wight Council (IWC).
We’ve just heard that a number of people have reported suspicious phone calls, advising them they are due a refund of council tax over-payments and adjustment of council tax band.
All sounds hunky-dory, until they ask you to pay £75 up front before the refund can be issued. Not only that, they’re asking callees to reveal the three digit security code on the back of their credit or debit card in order to process the charge.
Don’t do it!
These calls have nothing to do with the IWC and you should not hand over any debit/credit card details. If you do, you’re at risk of having large amounts of cash debited from your bank account.
If you receive one of these types of phone calls, finish the call and get in touch with IW Council Trading Standards on (01983) 821000.
