Walk-In Robbery Of Shop In Ryde Last NightWe’ve been told that there were lots Police searching for the robber last night.

It must have been a frightening experience for those in the shop. Our thoughts are with them.

It’s the second time this week that there’s been a walk-in robbery, after Hunnyhill Stores in Newport was hit on Monday.

As everyone on the Island knows, robberies are very unusual incidents, so to have two in a week is exceptional.

Update: 10.52am

Police are investigating a robbery at a shop in Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

A man entered McColls on Union Street shortly after 10pm last night (Wednesday, November 17, 2010).

He demanded money from the staff and left the shop with several hundreds of pounds in cash.

No one was injured, and the offender did not use any weapons to threaten the shop staff.

The suspect is described as:

  • ● Dark skin
  • ● 16 to 18 years old

He was wearing:

  • ● A blue and grey striped hooded jumper with the hood pulled tightly around his face. The back of the jumper featured a yellow / orange design on the back.
  • ● A hat underneath his hood
  • ● A black rucksack
  • ● Blue fingerless gloves

Detective Sergeant John Stirling of Isle of Wight CID said: “Police would like to thank witnesses for all the information they provided to officers in Ryde last night (Wednesday).

“Searches for a suspect are ongoing this morning (Thursday) while other lines of enquiry are explored including forensics and CCTV.

“I would appeal to anyone who thinks they may have seen someone matching the suspect’s description to contact us.

“There is no evidence at this time to suggest a direct link with the robbery at Hunnyhill Stores in Newport on Monday night, but we are continuing to visit businesses on the island to give them crime prevention and security advice.”

I think we are likely to see more and more of this owing to the government tactics of unfairly targeting benefit claimants, especially those with long term mental problems. Terrorising people, who cant cope with pressure at the best of times, with threats of destitution is going to force them into taking desperate measures, like this and worse, as what have they got to lose? At worst… Read more »

I totally agree Romeantique, we will see more. Shoplifting in Newport has increased and will continue to rise. Next up will be domestic violence as more and more stress is put on families. These are indeed very worrying times.

Along with the increases in drug addiction and alcoholism, as when people cant cope they attempt to block it out. This can only increase still further crime, prostitution and suffering, however I consider there is little doubt the system will be geared to conceal… Read more »

I agree with you. You know what I don’t understand, we know this, every sensible thinking person knows this and I don’t for one minute believe that the Government aren’t aware of this too, so why do it?

Its the Tory way Jackie, say anything to get voted in and then just dream up a plan and block vote it through, aided by the Judas Libdems.

And surprise surprise the bloke they have arrested for the robbery is homeless. He was remanded in custody and was appearing in court today. At least he now has a roof over his head.
