Another coup for the Minghella Film Festival with Richard Curtis (pictured) announced as judge. Also of note is that the deadline for entries into the competition has been extended. Here’s more in their own words. Ed
The Minghella Film Festival is delighted to announce the latest addition to our judging panel for their 19’s and Under, Short Film Competition.
Founder of Comic Relief, Richard Curtis CBE worked with Anthony Minghella on the TV series No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (based on the novels by Alexander McCall Smith).
Together they co-wrote and produced the pilot episode, with Curtis continuing to act as executive producer on the series after Minghella’s death.
As a writer and director he has been involved in some of the most successful projects in British film and TV in the last 30 years. His credits include: The Boat That Rocked, The Girl in the Cafe, Love Actually, Bridget Jones’ Diary, Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral as well as TV series’ The Vicar of Dibley, Black Adder, Mr Bean and Spitting Image.
Previous involvement in film festival
This is not his first involvement in the Minghella Film Festival; in 2009 he kindly provided a recorded message to introduce The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency.
During his message he talked about the short films Minghella made for Comic Relief, describing them as “brilliant” and “transformative”.
Make the judges laugh
With the hope of encouraging Young Islanders to express their creativity through film, they have been invited to try their hand at making a short film inspired by Comic Relief, with the direction to make the judges laugh.
Young Islanders’ whose films are shortlisted will be invited to attend a special gala evening with live music and guests to include stars of hugely popular TV series, The Misfits. The gala will be held on Friday 11th March at the Quay Arts Centre.
Incredible opportunity for young Island filmmakers
Gioia Minghella, founder of the Minghella Film Festival said, “This represents an incredible opportunity for young Island filmmakers. As a dear friend of Anthony, founder of Comic Relief and one of Britain’s finest filmmakers, Richard Curtis is the perfect person to be involved in this project and we are so excited that he has agreed to help.”
Other judges for the competition will include, Reg Poerscout-Edgerton (Ex-Medina High student and Casting Director of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes 2), Ollie Williams, winner of last year’s competition and members of the Minghella family.
The competition is free to enter. For more information on eligibility and how to enter, check out the Minghella Film Festival Website.
