Wow Fest Granted License

Yesterday’s licensing sub-committee meeting is one that we’re glad we decided not to attend.

Wow Fest websiteAccording to a report in the CP, the meeting to determine a license application for Wow Fest lasted eight and a half hours.

Despite large public objection on various grounds, the festival planned for August 2012 taking place on land between Shanklin and Whiteley bank, was given permission to take place.

Background of Directors not considered
Island resident, John Wortham, had raised objection to the application at Wednesday evening’s full council meeting, but was told by Cllr George Brown that the application would be determined purely on licensing rules and the former Jazz Festival festival organisers’ past history would not be taken into consideration.

Mr Wortham believed that granting the licence would be circumventing the public interest.

According to the report in the CP the capacity for 2012 festival was reduced from 30,000 to 18,000.

2013 would see a maximum of 20,000 and in 2014, 22,000.

Bring it on!! the more events like this the better. Only moaners are old people and Shanklin NIMBY’s. Are any of the hotels or businesses moaning.

I completely agree, multi-cultural, interesting events which bring tourism to the island should be widely encouraged, especially this green festival to ‘eco-island’. It would be crazy if we did not allow things that make the island an interesting, educational and fun place to be!

The only ones who will moan are the real (bread and butter) tourists. Many are giving the IoW a miss – Far too many festivals; that only make a lot of money for a few people. OK! Some hotels may be full at festival time, but what happens when the mud and rubbish has settled? Do you honestly think hotels want the festival clientèle? Keep them in… Read more »

It really frustrates me when people assume all festival goers are certain types! Lots are at festivals all weekend and then back to work in suits and ties on a Monday.

Its been reported that hoteliers are part of the action group (RAW). Say the Government planned to put a nuclear reactor at the rear of your property you’d soon be a NIMBY. Everyone is a NIMBY when pushed its a feeble retort to use.

No Rosco, the moaners are the musicians and other companies who are still owed large sums of money from their previous ventures.

No one who knows who the organisers are, are going to play or provide services unless they are paid upfront and all current debts are paid.

They are currently on the Musicians Union’s ‘contact us first’ list.

the licesnce was granted with restriction…they did not get the capacity they expected or the licensed hours for alcohol serving…even their London barrister couldn’t swing those. Normally I would be in broad agreement of this festival…but with the two well known ( and massively discreditted) organisors (hiding behind a London events management company) this has to be a no no. We cannoty have these people, who have… Read more »

In principal new events are good news for the Island, but surely if some of those involved in this one have failed in the past, people are right to be worried? It seems wrong that the council will grant a licence regardless of the applicant’s track-record. That said, if the people are as dodgy as claimed, no-one will buy a ticket to the show, nor will traders… Read more »

Oooo goody. Another festival in addition to the IW festival, Bestival, carnivals, scooters, motorbikes, lantern parades and road racers. I am looking forward to the WOW FEST. I shall join the tailback early so I can waste the maximum amount of fuel and time.

I said to myself when I first read this. ‘That nice Mr.Mullery ain’t going to like this, no he ain’t going to like this at all’

But don’t worry the musicians will want paying up front which will wipe this one out to start with.

Yet another festival. We don’t want it. There will be fierce resistance to this by people in the area and rightly so. The island is choc-a-bloc with festivals and events and I wet myself laughing at those who think that any of these major festivals are eco friendly. Wake up. Tens of thousandYet s of people using transport from around the country to get to here alone… Read more »

The problem is Mike, the licence has been granted, so the thing is legal.

I have no view either way as I avoid all of these events like the plauge.

You’re quite bitter aren’t you Mike D. Why can’t people have fun and enjoy themselves during the summer – We don’t all want to be miserable so and so’s

You’re right, I would like to enjoy myself during the summer. Perhaps I’ll camp on your lawn, play loud music, block your driveway with my car, be sick on your garden gnomes whilst tugging on a joint and urinating along the hedge line. I’d hate you to miss out on all the fun? X

This reply has NIMBY all over it.

ps. I live along Fairlee Road and love the festival, and have never had any of the problems you highlight – My gnomes have been vomit free for 10 years now! :)

Don Man,

Do you attend the festival or sell your tickets?

I know I cannot go swimming for a week, and I feel that the festival is an intrusion into my leisure activities. I need to swim every day for health reasons. Can’t get to Ryde or The Heights, too far for me to travel on a bus.

Amazing isn’t it! Don can travel half way round the world for a holiday but he can’t travel 30 minutes on a bus.

Maybe planning is another issue? At the hearing, Councillor Pugh hinted that without closing some public footpaths, the show may not go on at all.

It would interesting to know how much money the Council receive each year from all the festivals and island events combined.

The Council just receive complimentary tickets.

It’s businesses and the ferry companies who make all the brass; Joe Bloggs gets nowt.

I agree with Steve Smith above. As the organiser of several mainland music festivals I can tell you that the organisers of the proposed WoW Fest have such a bad name for failing to pay artists, suppliers and many other interested parties in the past that the word will quickly go out that this is an event to avoid like the plague.

Well said. Two of the directors of the WOW Festivals Ltd are none other than the Terrible Two, (of Jazz Festival debacle fame) who have a seemingly inexaustible stock of limited companies which then conveniently get wound up after the event, owing thousands of pounds to musicians and service providers. The MU will be most interested in this latest escapade. Most of the unpaid musicians who became unwitting… Read more »

I’ve heard on IOW Radio today that the organisers of the event say it will be completely solar powered. They must think we were born yesterday, this is just the kind of rubbish that they distribute to fool the masses into thinking the event is green. So all the stage equipment will be arriving in solar powered HGV lorries then? and not one generator will be used… Read more »

Do we really need another festival on the island? Particularly in August when the Island is (supposedly) in high season. Where are the festival goers going to stay? Accommodation on the island is slowly depleting as it is. Has the actual access to and from the site been sensibly considered? What sort of diversions are going to be put in place and will it be fully signed… Read more »
