Totland 'sea defences' Nov 2013 1 - Isle of Wight council

Save Our Totland Sea Wall petition goes to full council

A petition to ‘To Save Our Totland Sea Wall‘ will be presented to the full council next Wednesday (26th).

As the petition raised over 2,500 signatures (over 4,200 signed) the Isle of Wight council must hear from representatives and allow a debate to take place.

As readers will remember, the petition calls for

Funds to be made available to reinstate the sea wall revetment between Totland and Colwell Bays, by whatever means possible.

The process
Caroline Dudley, on behalf of the petition organiser, will speak to the council for five minutes and then local Member, Cllr John Howe (Ind), will have three minutes to make his comments.

A maximum of 15 minutes is then allowed for further debate and decision-making.

At the end of January, the Isle of Wight council released the specialist’s report on the situation at Totland, falling the landslide in late 2012.

The report revealed that stabilising the land and reinstating the sea wall would cost the council in the region of £1.5m-£2m.

I wonder if recent events will change the Governments view on issues like this ? However, this will probably not be top of the list whilst under cliff drive is under review !?

Sadly I fear this will never be repaired. It’s just too expensive with little perceived benefit.

Are we simply going to accept piles of rubble around our Coastline? If these are going to be more frequent what will it look like? Are we to accept permanency?

The Government has a responsibility to protect in this case and in the cases of natural disasters. Councils cannot afford to pay.

It is ours and the Nation’s heritage. It is our right and the Government’s duty.

The council can’t afford to do anything, but can they afford to do nothing? The decision they make has huge implications for the very fabric of the Island .

It’s all around Dorset, did you see the pictures? How many coastal places are affected? We can’t leave it like this can we?

We must have a solution, millions will have to be found.

This is our country for goodness sake!!!
