A charity supporting those with learning or physical disabilities, Autism and long term conditions will now be able to help even more Islanders, after receiving a £30,000 grant from the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales.
Way Forward already delivers a successful programme of activities from its base at Downside Community Learning Centre in Newport, but plan to extend this to the West Wight.
Heading West
A project co-ordinator will be based at West Wight Sports Centre in Freshwater for three days a week where they will run fashion and art workshops, as well as a drop-in support service. A photography course is also being developed.
The artwork produced will be shown in galleries across the Island and put up for sale, while budding fashion designers will get to show their outfits at a catwalk show at the end of the year.
“There is currently no structured provision of this type in the West Wight for people with these types of disabilities, and many of those living there have trouble accessing services based in Newport or other parts of the Island” explains Programme Lead Lee White.
“Many of those we work with find it hard to communicate and art provides an excellent opportunity for them to express their feelings and emotions. We have seen how it improves their quality of life by building their confidence and self-esteem.”
Outside adventures
For those feeling more adventurous, the charity is also working in partnership with Isle of Wight Adventure Activities to provide an outdoor programme including rock climbing, archery, falconry and kayaking.
A launch event is being held at the West Wight Sports Centre on 10th January where anyone can come along to find out about the programme.
Get in touch
The charity is especially keen to hear from those in the area, to find out what other activities they would like take part in. For more information contact Lee White on 01983 520128 or by email [email protected]
