Eric Geddes is the penultimate artist in our series of artist profiles featured in David George’s 5 Films About Artists, screening at Quay Arts tomorrow night.
Visitors to Quay Arts last year will remember the Still Moments exhibition, a celebration of 30 years of Eric’s work spread across the three galleries.
The exhibition certainly revealed the breadth and direction of Eric’s work and the photographic archive material, video, documentary and journals that accompanied the exhibition gave a fascinating and meaningful context to his work.
For those not familiar with Eric Geddes, he is a British sculptor, photographer and film-maker living on the Isle of Wight.
He’s inspired by and works predominantly on the Island’s shorelines.
His site-specific work involves the use of natural and found objects, either indigenous [stone, clay, seaweed] or flotsam [wood, metal, plastic].
The sculptures involve minimum use of tools, relying on placing, stacking, and wedging to achieve balanced forms, in which the fragility and impermanence are an intrinsic part of their vitality and significance.
We were fortunate enough to meet Eric last June and published a podcast that you can listen to.
We’re great admirers of Eric’s work, so were very grateful for his time and considered responses to our questions.
We’re also lucky enough to bring you a short section of David’s film about Eric prior to the screening tomorrow night.
Don’t forget the event which kicks off at 7.30pm is free and the bar will also be open.
Bring your friends and have an interesting night out.
